On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit Earth. How did Gagarin's landing of Vostok 1 differ from those we are familiar with today?

Unlike the astronauts of today, Gagarin did not land in his space capsule. He ejected from the spacecraft after reentry into the atmosphere and landed by parachute.
