Soon after moving into his house, computer programmer Tim Thaler made renovations most people would never notice. He installed hanging lamps that retract into the bedroom ceiling. He made an RFID-triggered secret door in his basement that leads to his tinkerer’s den. In that room he installed his latest home improvement: an iPhone-controlled retractable kitchen island that lifts directly up to the level of the cooking space above. Watch a video showing Thaler’s retractable kitchen island rise up to counter height...
Don’t miss the feature “Backyard Genius 2011” in the October 2011 issue of Popular Mechanics (on sale on 19 September) to read more about Thaler's sinking kitchen island and about more odd but inspiring creations.
