We asked you the following question in the November 2009 issue of Popular Mechanics:

Have you decided to live off-the-grid and find creative ways to produce and conserve resources at home? We’d love to know how you have chosen to cut your dependence on the power grid, the grocery store and the fuel pump.

These were your comments:

My husband and I live on a small farm in Natal. Our water supply comes from our stream, electricity from solar panels; we grow our veggies, fruit trees and have chickens and a few sheep. Our life is peaceful, beautiful but far from easy and we love it!
- Louise Ghersie

Can’t do without my veggie garden.

bring on the blackouts
My family run our lights and TV (soon to include fridge freezer and one or two other plug points)from P.V. pannels and a bunch of batteries and inverters. Our geyser is on a timer running for only an hour per day. We love the fresh veggies out of our garden, i mean where have you heared of a two year old eating broccoli willingly !! I must say the biggest problem is trying to find a lighter to fire up our gas hob as the electrial ignitor doesn't work during the regular power outages we have . If all goes well by the end of next year I will not be paying an electricity bill. Bring on the sunshine.

Geyser
Installed a timer on my geyser at a cost of R300. The geyser only switches on for 4 hours a day. Made my R300 investment back within the first month.
