Recently I had to mount a shelf in a kitchen, using 20 mm laminated pine. I had no brackets but did have access to some 10 mm rod, so I drilled 10 mm holes in the wall, knocked in two lengths of rod and cut them down to about 120 mm. Next, I drilled two holes into the board and tapped the shelf into place. No one could guess how it had been mounted. Important: make sure the rods are dead straight, and that you drill the holes to match!
