Get a grip

Wall plug
Date:31 December 2007 Tags:,

May I suggest an improvement to the wall plug described by Kevin Thorpe? (“Do it your way”, July 2007 issue). The plug’s grip can be significantly increased by cutting or sawing a slit in the end that goes into the wall. A wedge with a very gradual taper is inserted into the slit in such a way that the blunt end extends about 12 mm from the end of the plug. When the plug is driven into the hole in the wall, the bottom of the hole will drive the wedge into the slit, thereby expanding the split end of the plug and causing it to grip firmly.
