Useful, clever and downright diabolical tips for your home, workshop and garden that will save you time and money, and generally make life a little easier
Sometimes you just cannot find a machine screw or bolt of the right length, and you have to shorten it by cutting off a piece with a hacksaw, which often damages the thread and makes it difficult to attach a nut. Solve the problem by using a grinder or file to taper the end of the cut bolt, leaving it slightly pointed. Alternatively, turn the nut on to the bolt before cutting off the unwanted bit. Then, when you unscrew the nut, the thread will be restored.
