A container-sized renewable energy storage and management system developed by engineers at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) will now undergo real-world testing on the school’s campus.
The system was built using a unique technology which incorporates high-performance lithium-ion titanate cells, that have an average lifespan of 15 000 charge-discharge cycles. This technology, patented by the large-format lithium-ion manufacturer Leclanché, enables the container to store up to 500 kWh – enough to power 50 Swiss households for one day.
Developed by EPFL’s Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory, the system has now been inaugurated on the school’s campus and will allow researchers to investigate industrial scale solutions for renewable energy storage.
