When neurosurgeons plan brain surgery, it helps to be able to visualise the problem. Radiologists at the Tripler Army Medical Centre in Hawaii can now create quick, inexpensive 3D models of a patient’s skull. A 3D printer, a tool used by architects to create building models, uses inkjet technology to “print” layer by layer the high-resolution data collected by a CT scanner. The printer, made by Z Corporation, also allows surgeons to design perfect-fitting replacement pieces of medical-grade plastic for damaged skulls. – Alex Hutchinson
