While it’s well known that animals often have better hearing than humans, it might be less known that giant pandas have ultrasonic hearing. Tests conducted at the San Diego Zoo show both male and female giant pandas have hearing that extends into the range of a silent or ultrasonic dog whistle. This range betters on that of Polar bears, scientists have previously found the snow-dwelling bears are less sensitive to sounds at 14 kilohertz and above. But researchers are still stumped on why pandas have such incredible hearing. Even though they communicate with each other at ultrasonic levels, it is thought that it may be a holdover from their past.
