Human or replicant?

In the BotPrize tournament, run by a professor from Edith Cowan University in Australia, artificially intelligent combatants fight human players in a first-person shooter game. Players judge if they are facing a human opponent. The goal is to design AI so lifelike that at least half of the players think it is human. In 2012, after five years of attempts, teams from the US and Romania split the R60 000 prize. Strangely, the human players managed to prove their humanity only
40 per cent of the time. Aside from better gaming, the results could improve training simulations. – Alex Hutchinson
