Light from pure crystal

The inventors are calling it “LED 2.0” – a 12-watt bulb that produces 10 times more light than conventional LEDs. Rather than having a sapphire or silicon substrate like its competitors, the new bulb is made of pure gallium nitride crystal. That makes it more expensive, but Californian start-up Soraa says the bulb pays for itself in energy savings in less than a year.
