Morphine could increase the period patients live with pain, a study has found. In a study rats with nerve injuries were treated with opioids to relieve their pain, researchers found that the pain lingered months after the opioid treatments stopped. Opioids are known for the disagreeable side effects as well as their addictiveness, but this study could indicate a wider array of implications. A neuroscientist at the University of Colorado Boulder and study co-author Peter Grace told Science News their research suggests opioid treatment could be contributing to the problem of dealing with pain. Further research still needs to be done to see if humans display similar effects.
