To deal with the problem of space debris cluttering up the heavens, the CleanSpace One project has conceived a Pac-Man-like net system.
The CleanSpace One project under the auspices of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s Space Engineering Centre aims to increase awareness of space debris, to develop and demonstrate debris removal technologies and to de-orbit the SwissCube – a 1 kg satellite launched in 2009. The project started in 2012, under the auspices of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s Space Engineering Centre.
During the past three years the project’s engineers have developed a space cleanup satellite to trap the SwissCube and pull it into the Earth’s atmosphere for combustion, thus ensuring the SwissCube would not become another piece of space debris.
Watch the video see how the net system works.
