Have you ever seen Iceland’s most famous wreck? Pictured above is the US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane that crashed on Sólheimasandur Beach in 1973. Although the circumstances around the crash are unknown, it is rumoured the Douglas Super DC-3 experienced severe icing and was forced to land on the beach. Luckily the entire crew survived the crash, but the fuselage was abandoned.
Sólheimasandur Beach is located in southern Iceland, near the Skógafoss Waterfall. The site is however, difficult to visit as the terrain is too rough for vehicles without 4×4 capability.
