Sean's Blog

Staff writer Sean Woods can think of nothing better than “messing about in boats”… or maybe aircraft… or living off the grid… Hands-on by nature, he’s blown away by the ingenuity and quality emanating from backyard workbenches. And despite being called a gadget junkie, he doesn’t actually own any. Don’t ask…

AcerCloud: take your data and head for the clouds

Ever had a hard drive die on you, or, even worse, had your PC transformed into a glob of molten plastic courtesy of a devastating house fire? Iif you purchase an Acer computer from April onwards, these doomsday scenarios shouldn’t concern you one bit. That’s because from the second quarter this year, all their new consumer PCs will come bundled with AcerCloud, the company’s very own free cloud computing service.

Making renewable energy work

We’ve all heard earnest government officials and well-dressed financial pundits speak rapturously about the huge potential the burgeoning renewable energy sector has to boost job creation. But how much of what they say is to be believed? I speak to Ener-G Systems’ project manager Greg Midlane, a man fortunate enough to be working in the field, and get his take on the situation.

Meet the Washa – a flame-belching, propane-powered musical instrument

Conventional wisdom tells us that necessity is the mother of all invention. Yea, right. If that truly was the case, then we wouldn’t have many of the cool, fun gizmos that add colour to our modern, high-tech lives. And the Washa – a bizarre propane-powered musical instrument invented by James Clayton – wouldn’t exist.

What to do with that um, doggy doo? Introducing... Flush Puppies dog waste bags

Taking Fido for a walk can be a bit of a minefield. I mean, how come when our beloved pooches pick up their first good scent on the communal doggy telegraph they have to leave a steaming pile of oh, you-know-what as a token of their appreciation?

Sky Messaging: paint your name in the sky

Getting your message seen over all the competing media clutter we’re subjected to nowadays can take some seriously creative, not to mention logistical thinking. That’s where Sky Messaging, a new Cape Town based aerial marketing company, comes in.

Knifemaking: making your own forged blade is easier than you might think

Even today there’s still something quite magical about forging the perfect blade. However, hammering glowing-red, malleable steel into shape, and then preparing your newly formed cutting tool to last a lifetime, doesn’t have to be a process steeped in archaic mystique. To find out how it gets done, I signed up for a knifemaking course at Rutherford Forge.

Amphibious Argo: eight wheels, double the fun

For many stressed-out city slickers there’s nothing more liberating than hitting the off beaten track. However, if getting your vehicle bogged down in soft sand, stuck in mud or swamped by deep water isn’t quite your idea of a relaxing weekend, then maybe you need a serious can-do set of wheels - something like the amphibious all wheel drive Argo 8x8 750 HDI UTV (ultra terrain vehicle). I get a chance to take it for a spin and see how much fun one can have with eight wheels, off-road and on the water.

Self-taught master horologist seeks a worthy apprentice

In my mind, talented craftsmen are the backbone of any production-based society. However nowadays, with our fixation on university degrees, they’re becoming a dying breed, fast. Just go poke around a workshop near you and you’ll understand exactly what I mean – if the majority of artisans you see bent fastidiously over their machinery aren’t past retirement age yet, they’re getting pretty damn close.
