Imagine you could generate electricity by playing your favourite sport. Well, US-based Uncharted Play has developed a soccer ball that doubles as a light source source.

Called the SOCCKET, the ball harnesses kinetic energy through rotational movement, turning the generator built into it, which then powers a lithium-ion battery.

The ball is the brainchild of Jessica O Matthews, who realised that “the world of play was truly uncharted territory when it came to tangibly addressing real issues facing society”. Seeing that worldwide over 1 billion people have no access to electricity, and many children still do homework at candlelight, Uncharted Play created the ball as a sustainable source of light.

The company also manufacturers the PULSE, a jump rope which stores energy is the same way as the SOCCKET does.

Watch the video above to see how the SOCCKET works.
