If you thought GoPro’s HD Hero2 was the ultimate action-grabber, think again. Their latest wonder, the Hero3 Black Edition, is without a doubt the most advanced GoPro ever. It weighs in at a scant 74 grams, making it 25 per cent lighter (as well as 30 per cent smaller) than previous models. Video performance has been given a boost, too: the resolution and frame-rate have doubled, and it delivers much better low-light performance.
It can now capture 12 MP still photos at a staggering 30 frames per second, continuing to do so until the memory card is full. The 6-element aspherical lens combines with user-selectable ultra-wide, medium and narrow field-of-views to provide more perspective-capture options than ever. Built-in Wi-Fi and an accompanying waterproof Wi-Fi remote (which mirrors the camera’s LCD screen) make controlling it a breeze. The cherry on top is a GoPro app that allows full camera control and live scene previews via compatible smartphones or tablets. Price: about R5 000.
