An explanation of colour in visual storytelling

Date:12 August 2015

Colour helps to set the mood, we use colour to compliment our personalities or channel our emotions. Whether consciously or not, colour evokes feelings within us.

While researchers, Andrew J. Elliot and Markus A. Maier wrote in a 2007 paper that little scientific research around the influence of colour exists, they conclude that colour works as a definite stimulus to the viewers perception.

YouTuber Lewis Criswell has compiled the video above, which is a comprehensive explanation of the history of colour in film and the three elements of colour: hue, saturation and value. He also elaborates on why and how film makers use colour.
