• Hatching a chick without an eggshell

Hatching a chick without an eggshell only sounds strange until you consider that the outer shell only offers protection while the chick develops. Recently a video showing Japanese high school students hatching chicks without an eggshell went viral, making the world wonder how it’s possible. The answer is simple. Break the eggshell and pour the soft contents into plastic film suspended in a large glass without breaking the yolk. Add some water to the glass has to give the environment humidity. Then place into an incubation chamber until the chick “hatches”.

The technique is by no means new. A paper was written about this method of hatching a chick by high school students Yutaka Tahara and Katsuya Obara and was published by the Journal of Poultry Science in 2014. They found that more than 90 per cent of the embryos survived when incubated in this artificial environment.
