June 2012 Venus transit

Date:28 May 2012

It won't happen again until December 2117. On 5 June 2012, Venus will transit the face of the Sun in an event of both historical and observational importance. The best places to watch are in the south Pacific, but travel is not required. The event will also be visible around sunset from the USA.

Will we see it from SA? Do you have times?

  • Mike Mollatt

From the global chart at the beginning of the video clip it seems we will not be able to see this event here in SA. Is that correct?

Lucky to see this happening, won’t be here for the next one

According to the map provided, the answer is no.

Yes, very sad, but true. Most South Africans will not be able to watch the Venus transit of the Sun. There will be a partial sighting in the north east of the country. You can watch the transit live on http://events.slooh.com/. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
