The Portuguese soccer Cup final between Benfica and Vitoria Guimaraes kicked off in unique fashion on Sunday, 28 May. An official flew in by drone to deliver the match ball to the referee. The official brought a touch of modernism to Portugal’s oldest cup competition by soaring through the skies on a remote-controlled drone.
In the short video clip you see the official soar into the sky at the Estadio Nacional. After half a minute spent airborne he was brought down gently to the ground before handing the ball to the referee. The game itself saw Benfica beat Vitoria Guimaraes 2-1 to claim their 26th Portuguese Cup win.
Could this be the future of football and how officials receive the game ball? I don’t think so, but it definitely makes for great entertainment value.
