The Queen recently christened her namesake with a bottle of single-malt Islay whisky rather than the traditional Champagne. The HMS Queen Elizabeth‘s sea trials are scheduled for 2017 and flight trials will take place with Lightning II aircraft the following year. Work is already underway on a sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the two Queen Elizabeth Class carriers will be sufficiently versatile to tackle a full range of military tasks, from enemy engagement to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
