You might have learned that whales sing from Finding Nemo, Free Willy or even the BBC’s original Planet Earth series. But few know why whales sing. Whale songs basically come down to the facts that messages using air, odours and light don’t work too well underwater.
The video above, compiled by researcher Stephanie Sardelis, explains why and how whales sing alongside some interesting graphics. The video also looks some of the other sounds whales make.
