Smart, compact and unashamedly cute, the HP sprocket is a printer that’s in step with today’s lifestyles.
HP is a go-to name when you want to get serious about “traditional” office printers. Sprocket proves that the company not only has a sense of humour and whimsy, but also the ability to adapt to the ever-changing wants and needs of the broader consumer market. Sprocket is HP’s answer to a portable printer. Admittedly, it’s not the only portable printer on the market, but it is one of the most fun.
The 5 x 7,6 cm prints are at 313 x 400 dots per inch (dpi) resolution and can be sourced from your local device gallery, Google Photos, Facebook or your Instagram feed. You connect all your accounts in the connected HP Sprocket application (iOS and Android) interface and add prints to the unified queue. You can also take images within the app and customise your snaps with stylised text and pre-installed borders and filters.
Available in either black with silver accents or white with rose gold accents, the Sprocket is incredibly easy to use. It’s rechargeable via a micro-USB cable (which is included in the box) and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. But here’s the real magic: instead of using traditional printing paper, HP has opted to use Zink (zero ink) photo paper to print out your images.
Zink photo paper doesn’t require any ink cartridges to print out your image; instead, it uses a proprietary printing technology that places crystals on each sheet, which show up as specific colours when heated up. The yellow, cyan and magenta pigment is layered with heat insulation between layers. Heat is then applied to the specific dots and the crystals then react to the temperature and duration of the heat. There’s a 10-pack of paper in the Sprocket box, but you’ll want more very soon. Each pack of paper comes with its own calibration card.
Just when you thought that all the fun ended there, there’s one more surprise. The back of the Zink paper peels off, which means that your print can be used as a sticker! And that sense of fun and whimsy you feel when finding creative ways to edit and use these stickers is the very heart of the Sprocket experience. Lasting memories, printed instantly.
