If you’re about to leave on a weekend camping trip, or getting out the skottel braai in preparation for a post-rugby supper, you need to know if there’s enough gas left in the cylinder to do the job. Here’s my handy hint: rather than dash off to the gas shop to replace the cylinder prematurely, weigh it (an ordinary bathroom scale will do the job) and make an informed choice. You’ll need to subtract the tare weight of the cylinder and use the fl ow rate (in kg/hour; this should be stated on the regulator) to calculate how many hours of “burn time” you have left.
