About a year ago, my daughter moved into a small flat with a tiny courtyard that provided her only access to the outdoors. Intent on turning it into an attractive haven, we painted the walls in a nice shade of terracotta and screwed wooden battens to the top and bottom. Next, we installed ordinary chicken wire to form a matrix for a vertical garden, placed a few narrow containers and pots along the walls, and planted a variety of fast-growing creepers and flowers. A cast-iron patio table and chairs completed the project.

The results have been spectacular, and my daughter’s courtyard garden draws a lot of praise from visitors. The granadilla has been especially successful, producing healthy fruit and threatening to take over the house! If you have a soulless court-yard at home, give it a try.
