Imagine pedalling for an hour to power your home for 24 hours. Well, if you don’t have an abundance of appliances this could be plausible.

US-based company Billions in Change has developed a hybrid pedal system that generates electricity as you pedal. Called the Free Electric machine, the bicycle is designed to power a flywheel, which turns a generator, which then charges a battery. The idea behind the project was to give rural communities that currently have no access to electricity, the tools to generate their own.

Questions have arisen as to the validity of the claim, as the average human can potentially generate 100 watts – enough to power a lightbulb.
