Cancer Vecro

Date:1 July 2011

Cancer often spreads through elusive circulating tumour cells (CTC) that travel in the blood. Medical researchers at UCLA have developed a layer of tiny silicon pillars coated in antibodies that can extract CTCs from blood for identification – what the investigators call a liquid biopsy. Initial tests with prostate cancer patients show that the technique is faster and more sensitive than other methods, making it ideal for early detection of metastasising cancers.
