Medical experts are suggesting the best way to keep yourself safe from all kinds of illness, but especially the ever-growing coronavirus, is through proper hygiene.

While the first step to ensuring you are properly clean is to correctly wash your hands regularly throughout the day. If you’re on-the-go another option is to carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer for those moments between hand washes.

In the U.S, panic around the virus has led to stores running out of hand sanitizer as people have panic bought remaining stock.

In South Africa, the fear of the coronavirus hasn’t hit quite as hard and sanitizer can be bought in most stores, you can also make a bottle yourself at home. Here is how:

  • In a bowl combine ⅔-cup rubbing alcohol (99% isopropyl alcohol) with ⅓-cup aloe vera gel.
  • The amount of alcohol has to be adhered to so you’re ensured your hand sanitizer can be applied and dry.
  • Stir all the ingredients together
  • Take a funnel and decant the mixture into a bottle.

If you would like your hand sanitzer to have a more appealing smell, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.
