Grammy-nominated artist Akon has been dreaming of building his own city for a number of years. Now, it seems as though his dream could finally become a reality after the artist confirmed that an agreement has been finalised for ‘Akon City’ on Twitter.
Akon City will be constructed on an 800-hectare plot of land gifted to Akon by Senegalese President Macky Sall, and will use its own cryptocurrency called ‘AKoin.’ “It’s a 10-year building block so we’re doing it in stages. We started construction in March (2019) and stage two is going to be 2025,” Akon told Nick Cannon during an interview on Power 106 Los Angeles.

If all goes according to plan, Akon City will be the first city ever to run on 100% renewable energy along with being Senegal’s first Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
“If you can have a billion dollars sitting in the bank, while you have all these people suffering, it’s crazy to me. It’s like a waste of a billion dollars,” he explained in the interview.
