If you’ve ever ordered your cat a toy or scratch post from the internet, you probably noticed that they love the box the gift came in more than the gift itself. Amazon has recognized this unusual infatuation for boxes and decided to launch new eco-friendly boxes that can be repurposed into little forts or cat condos for your furry friend.
Aside from gifting your little buddy with a new make-shift home, the new eco-friendly boxes are part of an Amazon program called “less packaging, more smiles” which is aimed at reducing cardboard usage. According to Amazon, the company has reduced its total packaging weight by 33%, which is equivalent to around 1,5 billion boxes.
“Inventing and innovating in new types of packaging is one of the many actions we are taking as part of the climate pledge — our commitment to become net-zero carbon by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement,” Amazon’s director of customer packaging experience, Kim Houchens told USA Today.
Only certain items will be shipped in the eco-friendly boxes, which are scheduled to go out this week. If you manage to get your hands on one of them, you can create your very own cat condo by simply scanning a QR code or heading to Amazon.com/ThisBox for detailed instructions.
“We know customers love to get creative and reuse their Amazon packaging in a number of ways – this inspired us to create these new packaging designs that give customers an easy way to learn how we’re making our packaging better,” the company said in a statement.
