Even though Comic Con Cape Town suffered a setback this year again due to the Covid-19 pandemic, fans of pop culture can still look forward to a series of pop-up activities at different locations around the city.

Comic Con Cape Town, in partnership with the City of Cape Town is excited to give the public a taste of the real deal for one day only on October 2 2021.

You can look forward to activities like Cosplay competitions for professionals, casuals and kids, the popular Comic Art Drink & Draw & Sketch-off competitions, Pop Culture Quiz Sessions, Fandom meet ups across the city, Gaming and Tabletop Competitions and film watch parties to mention a few.

One of the aims of the event is to connect geek and pop culture communities of Cape Town at various locations with Covid-19 regulated capacities.

But that’s not all… Comic Con Cape Town Pop-up will run alongside the renowned Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) and the much-anticipated FAME Africa Week (Film, Arts, Media & Entertainment) with the goal of doing smaller activations in the current environment.

The CTIAF has become renowned for presenting world-class content and will be hosting a hybrid event (in person and online). It also hosts business-to-business sessions, producer events, networking opportunities and government panel discussions, student competitions, a family programme and an outreach initiative.

“We will again present a phenomenal line up of international and South African speakers, masterclasses, award-winning films and much more,” says Festival Director Dianne Makings. “The only difference this year is that some of this content will appear online and some in person.  It’s important to us that we host a safe and fun event that is Covid safe.”

“We have been navigating the landscape of the pandemic with caution and creativity, and the pop-up activities during this one-day-only fan day gives us the opportunity to connect with the Cape Town Comic Con fans, while we wait for a full force festival, and it allows for us to stay true to Comic Con’s spirit, which is to bring people of all fandoms and interests together and facilitate friendship and connection, all whilst celebrating the love of all thing Pop Culture” said Carla Massmann, Show Director.

Meanwhile, this is what Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith said: “Cape Town is Africa’s premier film and media destination… [and] Cape Town is the perfect city to bring the comic book culture alive. For the City, we believe providing support to film and media events such as Comic Con enables the creative sector to grow.”

Comic Con Cape Town Pop-up as well as the CTIAF will be compliant with all government and Covid-19 regulations as the health and safety of fans remains of paramount importance. The activations are all subject to change and dependent on any lockdown regulations.
