Covering up your MacBook Pro camera could damage it

Covering up your laptops camera with a sticker or post-it note has long been the go-to way to protect yourself from being spied on by hackers. However, a new warning from Apple suggests that this method of protection could actually end up harming your laptop in the long run.

The reason for this is because clearance between the display and keyboard are designed to very tight tolerances, and preventing a proper seal could interfere with the ambient light sensor and prevent features like automatic brightness and True Tone from working, according to Apple.

On July 10, Mac rumors reported that a MacBook Pro owner’s internal display broke after he applied a webcam cover.

In light of this, apple has suggested that users pay close attention to the green camera indicator light located next to camera to know if its on and is currently being used.

“The FaceTime HD camera built into your Mac computer is designed with your privacy in mind and uses a camera indicator light that glows green when the camera is active. So you will always know when the camera is on,” Apple wrote on its website.
