Galactic pyrotechnics: NGC 4258

When it comes to fireworks displays, there’s nothing to match a galaxy. Specifically, NGC 4258 (also known as M106), a spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way and located about 23 million light-years away. Rather than paper, gunpowder and fire, this galactic light show involves a giant black hole, shockwaves and vast reservoirs of gas.
