It’s been a long wait – nearly a decade – but images of Pluto beamed back to Earth by spacecraft New Horizon have been deemed to be worth the wait, with some calling them “mind blowing”.

Pictured above are mountains located near Pluto’s equator, which Nasa reports to be over 3 500 metres high. “The mountains likely formed no more than 100 million years ago – mere youngsters relative to the 4,56-billion-year age of the solar system – and may still be in the process of building,” says Geology, Geophysics and Imaging (GGI) team leader Jeff Moore of Nasa’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.
