The red planet’s frosted dunes

The image above shows frost covered dunes in the southern hemisphere of Mars. The image was captured in March this year, during the last part of the winter. During this period the dunes receive just enough sunlight to defrost the season carbon dioxide layer that covers the sand during the winter. The metallic spots show where the carbon dioxide breaks through to the surface.
