The Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk, is set to begin work on a brand new tunnel that will connect the city of Rancho Cucamonga with the Ontario International Airport. However, regular vehicles won’t be used inside this high-speed tunnel system. Instead, plans to develop a 12-seater electric van are underway.
The proposal for a new 4.5 km tunnel system was approved last week by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority and will reportedly used a brand new electric Tesla van to move passengers along at speeds reaching 204Kph.
“A San Bernardino County transportation agency voted Wednesday, June 3, to pursue a proposal from Elon Musk’s The Boring Co. for a high-speed tunnel linking Rancho Cucamonga with Ontario International Airport.” Said a county supervisor to The Mercury News.
According to reports from The Mercury News, the project will cost $60 million and will ferry over 1200 passengers to the airport and back per day.
At $60 million, the underground tunneling system would cost far less to construct when compared to the $1- to $1.5-billion light-rail extension originally planned for the area. It will also take just three to four years to construct, instead of the 10-year construction period the light-rail extention would have taken, according to the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA)

When the first tunneling system was opened in 2018, Musk originally planned to use electric vehicles specifically designed for the tunnel system. However over the years his opinion has gradually shifted to using multipurpose electric vans or larger capacity vehicles instead.
