A passenger with zero flight experience or knowledge stepped in to save the day when the pilot of a small plane fell ill and passed out.

He was left with no other option: the actual pilot was deemed “incoherent” by medical emergency personnel and he was the only passenger on the Cessna 208 Caravan, reports The New York Times.

According to NBC, the makeshift pilot relied on air traffic control to guide his landing at Palm Beach International Airport. The airport is around 110 kilometers north of Miami. The aircraft had departed from Marsh Harbour in the Bahamas an hour and a half earlier, according to Flight Aware.

Officials at Fort Pierce, north of Palm Beach reportedly got an emergency call at around noon on Tuesday. “I’ve got a serious situation here,”are the words that came trough the radio. “My pilot has gone incoherent. I have no idea how to fly the airplane.”

Listen to the audio:

The passenger-pilot was instructed to keep the wings steady and try keep the plane along the coastline.

Air traffic controller, Robert Morgan, used his wealth of flying experience to guide the passenger, who was reportedly very calm. “Hey, I just don’t know how to fly, you know, I don’t know how to stop this thing if I do get it on the runway,” Morgan said of the passenger to CNN.

But land he did. The passenger reportedly hugged Morgan and thanked him for getting him back safely to his pregnant wife. The original pilot was transported to a nearby hospital after the plane touched down.
