Mark Rober, a former NASA JPL engineer, succeeded in producing a large fluidized bed of sand inside an old hot tub after attempting 25 failed handmade copies of the science experiment.
When the correct amount of air is forced through sand, it begins to act like a fluid. Items buried in the sand will begin to float when air escapes between the sand particles. Others are will not. When the air is no longer present, the sand resumes its solid state.
