Airbnb is using AI to tell if you’ll be a bad customer

As a customer, the thought of turning up to an Airbnb and having the hosts be clingy, rude or creepy is always a worry. On the other side, as a person renting out your property, there is an equal concern that your guests could be terrors as well. Now, Airbnb is using artificial intelligence to analyse whether those booking accommodation will be reliable customers.

According to Futurism, the company is using the tool to scan Airbnb users’ social media posts and criminal records to rate their likelihood to show untrustworthy traits. These traits include narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

While Airbnb wouldn’t confirm when talking to the Evening Standard, as to the extent it uses this tool, their website states, “every Airbnb reservation is scored for risk before it’s confirmed. We use predictive analytics and machine learning to instantly evaluate hundreds of signals that help us flag and investigate suspicious activity before it happens.”

Those who are scanned and are found to be associated with fake social media profiles, those who are found to have given false details, those who have images or videos relating to drugs and alcohol and links to sex work would be downgraded.

The patent for this AI also says that the machine learning tool calculates the compatibility of the host and guest.
