Google Maps has launched it’s new feature that allows you to follow top Local Guides.
Google Maps Local Guides feature has been around for a while and allows anyone to sign up and earn points by contributing reviews, sharing photos, answering questions, add or edit places and checking facts on Google Maps. These points add up and the guides earn badges showing their ranks.
Others can then follow these people to get information and insight on specific places.
Now, Google are upping the stakes by having users follow Top Local Guides for insights into the best places to visit in their cities.
“Every month, more than a billion people use Google Maps, and they’re not just looking for directions. Worldwide, people are searching for things to do: ideas for the perfect date night, an amazing local coffee joint, or their next adventure,” they said in a blog post.
They will pilot the feature in Bangkok, Delhi, London, Mexico City, New York, Osaka, San Francisco, São Paulo and Tokyo. When users in these cities follow one of these Local Guides, their recommendations will be shown to them in Google Maps.
This is a shift as Google maps had previously trialled users following businesses but not individuals, making this more like a social network experience than a review site like TripAdvisor.
