To decrease dependence on rivals Apple and Google, Facebook is developing its own operating system (OS).
According to Bloomberg the planned operating system will focus on future products not brought out by Facebook yet, like augmented-reality glasses.
“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Andrew Bosworth, Facebook’s head of hardware, told The Information regarding the company’s plan to build a new operating system. “We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re going to do it ourselves.”
Facebook already had a plan in place should their apps be blocked on their competitors services. This is not their first attempt at severing ties from their big competitors but previous trials, like their mobile phones, failed.
Since some in the industry believe that items such as augmented-reality glasses will be the way people in the future will access the internet, Facebook is looking to have more control over its operations in that space.
