    Bushnell’s Backtrack

It’s always fun to head out on a new trail, but the thrill of the Great Outdoors can diminish rather quickly when it starts getting dark and you can’t remember where you pitched your tent. Bushnell’s Backtrack, a digital compass equipped with a highly sensitive GPS SiRF Star III receiver, allows all you outdoor adventurers to get back to where you started from with the minimum of fuss.

Indicating the distance and direction (as the crow flies) to a memorised spot, it boasts an accuracy of 3-5 m in rural areas, and 10-20 m in built-up areas. It’s powered by two AAA batteries that can be used up to 120 times or for 20 hours (the device shuts down automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity). Plus, it’s weatherproof and sufficiently compact to fit comfortably in your hand or pocket. Expect to pay about R1 390.
