Google’s “Experiments with Google” department has just come up with an interesting way to help people abide by social distancing laws by using nothing more than their smartphones.
The experimental project is called ‘Sodar’ and creates a virtual 2 meter radius around yourself using augmented reality. if you’ve ever played Pokemon GO or Mindcraft Earth, you’ll be familiar with the concept. The purpose of Sodar is to help its user visualise when they’re 2 meters away from someone, along with helping them maintain social distancing rules once lockdown has ended.
Sodar is not an application, so you don’t need to download it in order to use it. Instead, simply visit the Sodar website and scan the bar code at the bottom of the page. It must be noted that Sodar only works when you’re using Google Chrome on an android device.
Take a look at what Sodar looks like in action below.
Sodar – use WebXR to help visualise social distancing guidelines in your environment. Using Sodar on supported mobile devices, create an augmented reality two meter radius ring around you. #hacktohelp https://t.co/Bu78QrEN9f pic.twitter.com/kufatNFDQk
