One tech analyst believes that the new iPhone 12 will not run off of iOS but will rather the restored name of iPhone OS.
Jon Prosser tweeted the words “iPhone OS” and nothing else, prompting speculation about the renaming of the new phones operating system.

The original iPhone’s operating system was called OS and was rebranded iOS in 2010.
While this is just a rumour, it would not be a surprise as the company seems to have already begun splitting the operating systems to each of its different hardware, starting by renaming the iPad operating system to iPadOS.
Renaming iOS would bring the iPhone in line with the other products and their operating systems naming conventions. It is unclear if this change will just be a naming convention switch or actually represent changes in the system itself.
Fans of the device will have to wait until the start of Apple’s WWDC 2020 event, for an official announcement.
