Mercedes-Benz wowed the audience at CES in Las Vegas by unveiling their futuristic-looking Avatar concept car.
Designed in collaboration with Avatar director James Cameron, the glowing car looks like something out of the sci-fi movie. Aptly, the car is called the Mercedes-Benz AVTR, Advanced Vehicle Transformation.

The electric car is autonomous and features no steering wheel. The car is turned on when touching the centre console. As it is meant to be a vehicle that brings machine and human closer together, the car would recognise the driver’s pulse and breath. This is like how the Na’vi connect with the Banshee flying dragon-like creatures, who also respond and recognise their heartbeat.
The feature that’s caught the most attention is the bionic “scales” along the outside of the car. These 33 flaps are intended to be communication devices. “They can communicate with the driver and through the driver with their outside world through naturally flowing movements in subtle gestures,” Mercedes said in a statement.
According to TechCrunch, Ola Källenius, Daimler’s chairman and the head of Mercedes-Benz, explained during their presentation that the message pushed through this concept car is the promotion of sustainability throughout the manufacturing and driving lifetime of the car. This includes vegan interiors and graphene-based organic battery cells.
Since this is a concept car, it is not designed to go on sale, but as Källenius told the audience it aims to spark imagination among those in the industry.
