A South African Software developer, Francois Botha has designed and put together an Afrikaans version of the word game, Wordle, which has now been called “Wortel“.

Wordle is a very popular word guessing game that is based on the mechanics of the board game Mastermind, reports My Broadband.

Wordle is a web-based word game that was originally developed by Josh Wardle.

Wardle initially created the game for himself and his partner to play, and the game eventually went public in October 2021. By December 2021, the game gained a large amount of popularity.

The game was purchased by The New York Times in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, with plans to keep it free for all players; it was moved to their website in February 2022.

How it works

Players have six chances to guess a five-letter word. The game will indicate whether the letters have been correctly guessed and if they are in the correct position.

Botha further explained that the Afrikaans translation of the online game was only made possible thanks to an open-source project called React-Wordle.

“While much of React-Wordle was coded by one person, it has since been handed over to others and is supported by a multitude of contributors,” Botha told MyBroadband.
