A recent test of mobile network speeds saw MTN claim first place as the fastest internet in South Africa according to a report by Mybroadband insights. To reach this conclusion over 300,000 different speed tests were conducted by MyBroadband Android speed test app users between October and December.

According to the research, South Africa had an overall average upload speed of 9.50Mbps and download speed of 26.70Mbps. In terms of individual ISP’s, MTN had an average download speed of 40.60Mbps, Vodacom had an average download speed of 32.20Mbps, Telkom showed average download speeds of 21.60Mbps, Rain had average download speeds of 16.40Mbps, and Cell-C came in last place with an average download speed of just 16.40Mbps.

Apart from download and upload speeds, the study also looked at the best overall network providers in South Africa, giving each of them a “network quality score” out of 10 based on upload and download speeds, along with latency. Once again MTN claimed first place with an overall network quality score of 9.85. Vodacom took second place with a score of 8.01, followed by Rain on 5.58, Telkom on 5.32, and Cell-C in last place with a measly score of 4.91.
