Plague Inc. is a popular mobile game that lets you don your mad scientist hat and infect the entire world with a plague of your own design, with the sole objective of the game being to rid the world of all humans.
The game has been around for seven years now, which is quite the feat for a simple mobile game. Real-life events like the current COVID-19 pandemic and the ebola outbreak of 2013 keep bringing people back for more.
However, seeing as the world is currently going through an unprecedented virus outbreak, Ndemic Creations, the company that made Plague Inc. have decided to make their game a bit less morbid by adding an entirely new mode.
In the new game mode, instead of playing the role of ‘mad scientist’, player can now attempt to save the world from a global pandemic. It’s more than just a new game mode though, the designers are working with the World Health Organization, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network and other groups to give players an entertaining and informative experience.
“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that so many players would be using Plague Inc. to help them get through an actual pandemic,” said James Vaughan, creator of Plague Inc. “We are proud to be able to help support the vital work of the WHO and CEPI as they work towards finding a vaccine for COVID-19”.
Ndemic Creations haven’t just been focusing their efforts on creating new game modes. The company has donated R4,1 million ($250,000) to the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
Everyone is impacted by COVID-19. On behalf of all Plague Inc. players, we have just donated a quarter of a million dollars to @CEPIvaccines and @WHO to help fight it.https://t.co/kAZtjwn89b pic.twitter.com/DinQpvRqCk
