More than just a smartphone
How do you improve on the design of a waterproof smartphone that’s already pretty amazing? The boffins at Sony presumably asked themselves the same question when designing their new-and-improved Xperia Z1. Their solution: kit it out with the company’s proprietary 27 mm wide-angle, f/2 aperture “G Lens”, a custom-made 1/2.3-type CMOS 20.7 MP sensor and a Bionz (for mobile) image-processing engine. The end result is a phone camera that can hold its own against most conventional compact cameras.
It also comes with some cool pre-loaded apps to enhance the user experience. Social Live lets you broadcast video footage to Facebook in real time and receive live comments from your buddies while filming. Info-eye is an innovative visual Web search function that provides information on books, wines, buildings and the like when they’re being photographed. Timeshift burst captures 61 images in 2 seconds, so you don’t miss the shot. Finally, AR effect overlays a selection of customisable animations using augmented reality technology.
Waterproof and dust resistant, it features a solid one-piece aluminium frame with tempered glass on both sides. Other features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with a 2,2 GHz quad-core CPU, a 16 GB flash memory (expandable up to 64 GB) and a 3 000 mAh battery. Price: about R10 000.
